Baker College announces the launch of its Certified Medication Aide (CMA) Program, which supports Michigan’s growing demand for skilled healthcare professionals. Set to begin Spring 2025 at the Baker College of Owosso campus, this 100-hour program is designed to train Certified Nurse Aides (CNAs) to safely administer selected medications in nursing homes and skilled nursing facilities under the supervision of a registered nurse.
Baker College is among only six approved institutions in Michigan offering this program, which follows the National Council of State Boards of Nursing Medication Assistant-Certified Model Curriculum. The training includes 60 hours of classroom instruction, 10 hours of skills lab instruction, and 40 hours of supervised clinical practicum, ensuring a comprehensive, hands-on learning experience.
“This program is a game changer for Michigan’s healthcare workforce,” said Troy Napier, Assistant Director of Strategic Partners & Training at Baker College. “By equipping Certified Nurse Aides with the skills to assist in medication administration, we will provide much-needed support to licensed nurses to improve efficiency and enhance patient care.”
Key Curriculum Topics Include: Medication Orders, Documentation, Storage & Disposal, Prevention of Medication Errors & Reporting Symptoms, Medication Basics & Forms of Medication, Legal & Ethical Issues in Medication Administration, Safety, Individual Rights & the Role of a Certified Medication Aide.
Upon completion, graduates will be eligible to take the Michigan Medication Aide Competency Test to become state-certified. To enroll, applicants must hold a valid Michigan Nurse Aide certification and have at least 2,000 hours of employment as a CNA in a nursing home or skilled nursing facility within the past two years.
