What’s been your most memorable experience from your time at Baker?
One of my most memorable experiences at Baker came during one of the most difficult times in my life. I lost my dad toward the end of my program, and the help I got–not only from my teachers– but classmates as well, was amazing. By taking online classes it’s not easy to create friendships because you never see each other. However, I had two classmates that reached out right away and kept checking on me to make sure I was okay. It showed me even through a computer screen you can create friendships that you don’t even realize are there.
Who has had the greatest impact on your academic journey?
My husband, he was by my side through it all. When I wanted to give up he was right there to help push me and remind me I can do this.
Have there been any times of hardship or difficulty that you’ve had to overcome?
Yes, I am a stay at home mom, and during my time at Baker I had both boys at home with me because they weren’t in school yet. I had to learn how to balance my home life, while also making time to focus on my classes. I also had two really hard deaths during my last three semesters that made it tough to keep pushing to finish school. However, with the push from my family and teachers, I was able to accomplish a huge achievement.
What’s next for you in your career? What’s the first thing you will do after graduation?
The first thing I will do upon graduation is enjoy a well-deserved break. I want the opportunity to focus on my family. Next, I would like to obtain a job to help individuals and families who struggle with addiction.
Is there a faculty member who made a lasting impact on your journey? Give them a shoutout!
No one stood behind us in our journey like Dr. Jessica Topor. We aren’t just students to her, we are human beings who have a life outside of school. She always told us she was our mama bear and we were her cubs, and she took that seriously.
What words of wisdom would you provide to future Baker students?
Make sure you have a support system because school can be hard. Reach out for help. No question or concern is too little.
