Keesha Pike (Simons), Human Services Graduate
As we count down to graduation, we’re celebrating the incredible journeys of our Baker students in the Road to Commencement series. This student spotlight reminds us that even the hardest roads can lead to the sweetest success. From overcoming challenges to embracing growth, meet Keesha Pike (Simons) who proves that resilience and purpose go hand in hand.
What’s been your most memorable experience from your time at Baker?
My most memorable experience at Baker was sitting in my internship classes and feeling so comfortable and in a safe place. I was able to open up and to share more of my journey in a place that was full of people who genuinely cared for my well being and wanted to see me be successful on my journey.
Who has had the greatest impact on your academic journey?
My professors have had the most impact on my academic journey. I have found such passion, care, and enjoyment within the classes that I have taken. Being able to see so many Professors who all have such different jobs, has shown what a degree in human services can lead to. Human Service professionals are in many different professions and make such a difference in the lives of those they interact with. I am so grateful to be joining such amazing people on my journey and to be able to make the differences and learn in the future.
Have there been any times of hardship or difficulty that you’ve had to overcome?
Over my two years at Baker, I have gone through a divorce, started over in my hometown, and have been navigating my youngest son’s autism diagnosis. I have continued to fight for this degree with every fiber of my being. Fall of 2024, I was able to take 5 classes and receive a 3.6 GPA. It was my hardest semester and the one that came with the most challenges but also the most lessons. I could not have done that without the environment at Baker. While I could have been completely pushed out of the program due to my difficulties, I was instead embraced and was encouraged to use those difficulties as a fuel to make myself a better student. Baker College has provided such an amazing environment that I have been able to come out on top every semester. My life has not always been easy, but I am here and I am now writing this in my last semester before I graduate. I am not just a mom, a fiancee, a daughter, a sister, or a friend. I am officially going to be a BAKER GRADUATE and a Human Services Professional.
These are things that I never thought I would attain. I am a first generation graduate. So here are my final thoughts about my hardships. While in the moment they were hard and could have stopped me in my tracks, I did not quit. It was due to the educators at Baker who always showed me grace and love in my weakest moments. They are the reason that I am here.
What’s next for you in your career? What’s the first thing you will do after graduation?
After graduation, I will be taking the summer off to spend time with my family, friends, and kids. After 6 years of school, I owe my kids a summer with their mom, just traveling, and planning activities. Then in the fall, I will be returning to Baker to study for a Masters degree in Counseling.
Is there a faculty member who made a lasting impact on your journey? Give them a shoutout!
I would like to thank Jessica Topor and Andrea Calabrese. Both of these faculty members provided such motivation and taught memorable lessons. They take their time with the students who they mentor and make sure everyone is feeling valued and supported. I cannot say enough about these women– that not only are they super star educators– but they work so hard outside of that to make differences in their workplaces. I appreciate the time they took out of their days to respond to emails, to listen to me while in class and sometimes after class. They are outstanding examples of the type of human services professional I strive to be.
What words of wisdom would you provide to future Baker students?
My words of wisdom would be, take the leap. If you feel the call to go to college and pursue a degree, do it. Do not let anything stand in your way. You deserve to attend a college that genuinely wants to see you succeed. Not only do the professors at Baker encourage success but so does the administration. I have never felt more accepted, cared for, and encouraged than I did at Baker College. I found a home, and have made friendships that I will carry in my heart. It was such a great place that I decided to return in the fall to pursue a Masters Degree.
